Castle Bromwich

A Glimpse into the Past

History buffs at Castle Bromwich were treated to a selection of old photographs from Carl Chinn’s Birmingham Lives archive at the North Arden Local History Society. Archivist and local author Keith Clenton gave a fascinating insight into Birmingham’s lost businesses and industries of which there are many. The BSA, Dunlop’s, Fisher & Ludlow and Metro Cammell were once major local businesses employing thousands of workers in their day. Keith Clenton gave a glimpse of the City of a Thousand Trades in times past.

All are welcome to the society’s meetings, the next of which features Simon Buteux of the Birmingham Conservation Trust who will talk about the recently restored Coffin Works of Newman Brothers in the City Centre on Thursday 11 June at 8 pm in the Windsor Room at Arden Hall B36 9PB.

The photograph shows bodies being made for the Morris Minor at the Fisher & Ludlow factory (now the Jaguar) in about 1950.
