Council Tax Support 2016/17

Solihull residents who receive financial support to help pay their council tax will continue to receive the same level of support for 2016/7 following a proposal approved by Solihull Council.

Local authorities have been responsible for delivering their own council tax support schemes since April 2013, when the national scheme was abolished. The Council’s current agreed local scheme, which is based on the previous national scheme, will run until March 2016.

The Council has agreed to continue with the existing Council Tax Reduction scheme from April 2016 until March 2017, with some minor changes recommended.

There will be alterations for people who are self-employed, as well as a proposal to allow council tax reduction to be paid from the same start date as Universal Credit. Additionally, in line with national changes to Housing Benefit, the family premium will be removed from the scheme and new claims will be backdated for a maximum of one month.

Councillor Bob Sleigh, Leader of Solihull Council, commented ‘By proposing to continue with our existing scheme, we have been mindful of those residents who are facing financial difficulties and the effect that placing people under additional financial burden might have.’
